Sketchbook Fun

For the second to last day of Illustration Concepts/Practices, we had our last sketchbook assignment due (1 thing from life + your choice). We had the entire class to take one of the sketchbook assignments from the year and pull it into photoshop to create a finished piece. I had a lot of fun with it and am inspired to do things like this more often. Here's my friend Andrea and a bunch of trippy monsters smashed together singing random lyrics from random songs I was listening to at the time:

The photoshop version essentially involved painting in three colors and throwing a water texture down.
My favorite its the salamander-looking guy standing in the middle.

Kissability by Sonic Youth

Made this sketch a few months ago - finally decided to turn it into a little something. Been feeling a random urge to upload a handful of these designs to Skreened and order some shirts.

Juiceboxx Process & Finale

I saw a show Wednesday, and I'd go so far to say that the co-headliner was the most punk-rock thing I'd ever experienced. Here we are with Juiceboxxx lyrics.

This time around, I vectorized in Illustrator, then didn't really come back to it, just making layers and layers in Photoshop. Textures include: a dog in a parking lot. A friend in front of a television. A football field at night. An entire marching band shoved into a dark room. And many more.

Japanther Process and Finale

A drawing I did much earlier this summer and had on the back burner - I really like this one. Wasn't sure how to color it, but had fun making it look like a springy explosion of clown vomit. Lyrics are from the song "Dirge" by Japanther, a band I can't get enough of. I used photos of flowers, night-drives, and clouds.

Gaslight Anthem Process and Finale

Another lyric piece. This time I quoted a line from the new Gaslight Anthem album that dropped today. It's an understatement to say that I love it. I used more photos that I had on my computer (a cow, a card tower, a cat...) and pushed them together in photoshop, and in Illustrator, I used the live trace and live paint tools to create blocks of color over the different areas such as the fire, the lyrics, and the eye.

Number Twelve Process and Finale

Fun sketch-turned design I made up based off song lyrics by a band called The Number Twelve Looks Like You. I was inspired last night to start thinking about the art sale this fall - I am wanting to make a small book of basic vectors - probably just black and white, thus being a small coloring book - to make a few extra bucks and give anyone who doesn't want to spend too much that day something to take home. Below is the vector I created after the sketch/scan, then the textures I pushed into it in photoshop. Above is the finished pushed together illustrator file.
