Roomie Ryun

This week, my roommate returned from his internship. We have a fun senior year ahead of us.
What better way to celebrate than with a quick doodle of him dancing and looking swanky?
I may have dressed him slightly differently, but he is fashionable indeed. I plan on making more sketches like this before school starts so that I can get ready for my character design class!

#ManCrushMonday #1

Here are some sketches and a final drawing/sketch painting of my boyfirend, Jon.
We've ordered lots of pizza this summer from a local place here in Columbus called The Pizza Joint, formely known as Gumby's.
He is the pizza to my pokeysticks.

Selfie Sunday #1: High School Sarah

Last Sunday, I did a small photoshop sketch - it was refreshing to take a break from more underdeveloped sketching and animating. I decided: why not do something every Sunday?
I also decided: why not play up that obnoxious Instagram hashtag, #selfiesunday? So here is the first of many more this month: say hello to high-school senior Sarah. It's been awhile.

Senior year of high school, my small-town, public district decided to implement a dress code. I wore band buttons and got my gauges to size 0, I got in trouble with a pink streak in my black/white hair, I wore tight black pants with a studded belt and converse shoes... of course. Oh, the "scene" days of seventeen. At least I kept it classy with some Arizona tea almost all of the time.

I'm Still Alive - Pig Turnarounds + Backgrounds

June has been busy with CCAD Orientation-Leading, starting a new part-time job, and drawing.

I made it a goal to finish my HARDCOW short, and I'm sticking to it. Here's a turnaround of the pig that GOES HAM! in my short. The last scene I need to animate is one which involves this fella and our star cow dancing head-to-head: which I gathered some long-awaited reference for, thanks to my boyfriend and another one of our friends who is actually very talented at hardcore dancing!

Ah, why not. Here's a slight bit of proof of reference:
Happy Violence from Jon and Ben!

Here's a handful of the backgrounds I have been creating. When I animated for class, I had basic background layouts that I planned to follow until I finally got around to making backgrounds. I plan on approaching backgrounds very differently (sooner!!) next time around - it's funny that after doing it super-backwards, I have really learned from the challenge of "dealing with what you already have" - they are simple and angular (to contrast VS the organic characters), made in Illustrator.

Soon, I'll be updating with a stupid-big sketch post to catch up with sketches from the last semester (!) as well as the sketchbook I started at the beginning of this summer.

Hardcow Cow Turnarounds

I have been working on some character turnarounds for my Hardcore-Hardcow character.
Next up: a pig, a chicken, and a grab-bag of barn-yard citizens.

Hardcow Storyboard Update & Rooster Crow Pass 2

New storyboard pass I have been meaning to get off my chest! I feel like it is long overdue, and I definitely feel that I can finally, genuinely get the ball rolling. It's funny, once I break it down like this, I see how simple the story really is - dancing cow dances through a barn and finds a dance opponent - I feel immensely better about tackling it.

Here's an update on the first scene as well as the twisty background/behind the barn from the beginning. It's come a long way since last time (last thumbnails: http://sarahmaeschmidt.blogspot.com/2013/01/in-class-cow-gesturesrough-storyboard.html; first attempt: http://sarahmaeschmidt.blogspot.com/2012/09/media-arts-seminar.html).

Sketchbook Fun

For the second to last day of Illustration Concepts/Practices, we had our last sketchbook assignment due (1 thing from life + your choice). We had the entire class to take one of the sketchbook assignments from the year and pull it into photoshop to create a finished piece. I had a lot of fun with it and am inspired to do things like this more often. Here's my friend Andrea and a bunch of trippy monsters smashed together singing random lyrics from random songs I was listening to at the time:

The photoshop version essentially involved painting in three colors and throwing a water texture down.
My favorite its the salamander-looking guy standing in the middle.

Illustration Final: Space Bears

First, I took the drawing I made into Photoshop and blocked out the basic shapes I needed with the magic wand. I took those shapes into Illustrator where I live traced them and cleaned them up with the pen tool. I took these new shapes and created new layers of shadows and highlights with the knife tool (my favorite tool ever). After I was done, I took the clean vector graphic into Photoshop and created a background using a combination of layers and layers of paint as well as miscellaneous stock photography that I had photographed and saved to my hard drive. Voila! Space Bear!

Effects Animation: Background Design

A background I comped out on Photoshop. I may tweak it before the end, but now it's time to animate!

Juiceboxx Process & Finale

I saw a show Wednesday, and I'd go so far to say that the co-headliner was the most punk-rock thing I'd ever experienced. Here we are with Juiceboxxx lyrics.

This time around, I vectorized in Illustrator, then didn't really come back to it, just making layers and layers in Photoshop. Textures include: a dog in a parking lot. A friend in front of a television. A football field at night. An entire marching band shoved into a dark room. And many more.

Bomb-Ass! Process and Finale

This is one of those I had while I was waiting to fall asleep one night. I'll get these ideas and text them to myself just in case I forget them. It's corny, but it keeps me busy. I got to thinking about an adjective that I happen to always use (if not out-loud, constantly in my head), "bomb-ass". I am sure it's on urban dictionary, somewhere, if you aren't sure what it means. I thought about the literal reality of it, and how it definitely wouldn't be very "bomb-ass" if you had a "bomb-ass". So here's an adjective-turned noun. Just in case it didn't make sense, I slapped "bomb-ass" across the [it's too late now, I'm just going to say it] ass, and added a little bit of color/texture with my pen and a Copic marker. Afterwards, in photoshop, I added more color and amped up the texture. I'm happy with the way it came around!

Number Twelve Process and Finale

Fun sketch-turned design I made up based off song lyrics by a band called The Number Twelve Looks Like You. I was inspired last night to start thinking about the art sale this fall - I am wanting to make a small book of basic vectors - probably just black and white, thus being a small coloring book - to make a few extra bucks and give anyone who doesn't want to spend too much that day something to take home. Below is the vector I created after the sketch/scan, then the textures I pushed into it in photoshop. Above is the finished pushed together illustrator file.
