Skinny Chickens in Costumes

I'm really trying to crank out the homework this weekend for the sake of my sanity during these upcoming weeks. Here's our next assignment for Character Design: take the character from our character-swap project and shove him/her through different time periods and costumes. Here's what we have! Viewer discretion advised, there's some posers in there.

I think it's fun I ended up stuck with a wizard on this project - I like to think that he would zip through time to get different things done in a quest-like fashion. It makes perfect wizard-sense!

This is another exercise that I suggest anyone trying out. Give it a shot!

Space Puppy Lineweight Fun Party

One of my few remaining assignments in the beloved Character Design class is this one regarding line weight. We had to take an existing character and draw him/her using 5 different line styles. I chose to experiment with Space Puppy, considering I will be drawing lots of him over the next few months, and also because I am curious as to how exactly he will end up in the final render of my thesis project.

This is definitely an exercise I think everyone should give a shot. The biggest thing you get for it is a better understanding of why line weight is important and appreciated. Also, it instantly forces you to push and pull your line style - something that isn't always at the forefront of our minds!

Halloween Bat Face Party!

Here's my friend Victor the Vampire Bat that I have been working with this semester. The assignment was to take five different expressions and express them in five different ways. Here's glad, sad, mad, egad!, and - here's my bad attempt to create a confused/questioning synonym that rhymes - "was it that bad?"

Viktor the Bat #2: Silhouettes

The next assignment for our first character design is to make 20 different silhouettes of our initial character. Here are some shadow-like bat creatures. Yes, it is possible to drink coffee upside-down.

I've been doing my best to keep up with my Character Design class and the new blog we've been keeping for it. Here are some of the updates from my first character post and my first life-drawing post. Homework includes a silhouette dump and more life drawing... more to come!

Viktor the Bat #1: Initial Design

 

Viktor was a working-class, office-dwelling vampire in-hiding. Since he had spent so many years repressing his powers, he got himself stuck as a vampire bat one late night while working overtime for a client. Now that his secret is out, he must work late night after late night in order to keep his job. He is sleepy, clumsy, shy, and quietly eccentric. He is also driven, hard-working, and helpful.

This is the first character design for this class. I once had a conversation with some fellow strange art-school friends about the bats that flew around our giant ART sign at night. We discussed the necessity of an urban legend regarding students that never slept enough while attending school would inevitably turn into vampire bats and fly around campus's sign for the rest of eternity. This character started more so as an Vampire-art student who pulled one too many all-nighters. Due to his hip vegetarianism, he never had enough energy to change back into his more human-friendly form. After more drawings, I felt more attracted to getting him out of the same setting I was in and into a work environment - picturing a bat trying to do office work among normal, much taller human beings seems very funny to me.

Sketch ATTACK! #8 - Space Puppy Returns... Again

Here's the last batch of sketches I have compiled.... for now! More Space Puppy. There's some drawings of storyboard thumbnails in here: I was working on making sure each shot made sense as far as flow and leading the eye from shot to shot. I plan on revamping my initial storyboards as well as the animatic before I dive in.
