Animation II Character Rig Idea

Our next project in Animation II is a quick project involving a character rig and a simple animated action. I did a few sketches of a silly little creature, named him Petey, and decided I will be making him SQUAWK! This will be my first character rig, so I am really interested in seeing how it turns out.

Cafe Sketch Final

Life Drawings | Make Your Own Book

For my beloved Cafe Sketch class, we had to chose at least 30 of our best sketches from the year and push them into one final Blurb.com book. With your order, you get this nifty little book preview. Voila!

The rest of my Cafe Sketch sketches can be found here:

Multi-Plane Background

Pass "1" after a handful of passes. This is what the interior of my brain looks like during finals week. I would like to add this to my walk cycle when I'm finished with it. The project called for lots of pegs and fumbling with the network in Harmony - things I haven't worked with very much, and things I feel much more comfortable with now... I'm looking forward to adding background camera movement to my future animations. Here's my stupid-huge Photoshop files:

Illustration Band Project In-Class

In-class exercise/comp design for a tour bus and CD cover! We were encouraged to do more than just slap our already used ideas and images down. My "theme"... I suppose I chose rhinos, because if I were on a highway, it would be pretty interesting to see a rhino running next to my car.

Day #24: Ice Skaters

Illustration Band Project Process 2

Sketches/comps! A little bit more of my process of making a few designs and slapping them down on tees for class tomorrow. We had to make three different designs and give them some varying looks with 4 colors a piece for class - after critique, we'll decide which one we'll run with and what direction to start taking it.

I tried to make three very different designs: one is heavily based on reference (http://www.lussierphoto.com/wp-content/gallery/off-season/20101106_rtl5840_hdr-edit.jpg), one is loosely based on reference(http://home.comcast.net/~bygonebyways/80-NM-Deming-Mirador_Motel_Sign.jpg), and one is totally random and obnoxious, like a handful of band tees I have ran into in my lifetime.

Pokemon Challenge

The Illustration Student Collective has had this Pokemon-challenge going on, and entries are due at the end of the month. We had a list of all the original 150 Pokemon, and a handful of us signed up to draw one a piece. The response of members was impressive and fun, and here's my take on good old Marowak. I like to think of it as, "Marowak on Crack"

This was lots of fun, and I especially had fun with textures and paint layers on paint layers on paint layers - it was a good warm-up to the rest of the semester. The break was great, but now it's time to crack the whip and finish this semester! Last year, I never got on Facebook - I am probably going to do the same thing this year, too.

Illustration Band Project Process

As we round the corner to finals this semester, our Illustration class is tackling a big month-long project involving an imaginary band. We drew a genre out of a hat, and then went to a random band-name generator to create our "client" (without choice - emphasizing, "you don't usually get to pick your clients). I got "indie" and "Careless Motel".

First we did a collection and handful of thumbnails for a logo - then we narrowed those down into 6 black and white examples. Next, we tackle the idea of a t-shirt design - I have three ideas down, an intricately structural drawing of a motel, a more graphic motel-sign, and a very random one (not complete yet). I went to town on the motel sketch as well as the one that isn't pictured, but I kept fumbling over and over with the sign sketch (below) - I'm totally fine with it, since I am thinking of making the design more shape-based and simplistic.

We also had to write a "buyer description" - that was fun! I named him Winston Lindenberry.

Attitude Walk Pass 2 & 3

Another rough pass and a final (for now) pass at colors/linework. There's a handful of things I am ready to work on before the end of the year show, but until then, I have this! I am working on a continuous background that should be done this time next week.

Kissability by Sonic Youth

Made this sketch a few months ago - finally decided to turn it into a little something. Been feeling a random urge to upload a handful of these designs to Skreened and order some shirts.

Band-Geek Alla-Prima Painting

Reference and a painting. Was done in one illustration-class session, alla-prima style with acrylics! If I could do it again, I would work on keeping consistencies with my warms and cools, I'd un-muddy the uniform, and I would tone down the hair a bit. Thanks Krista for your lovely band-geek-ified face!

Attitude Walk Character and Notes

Here's a quick character design that I made up for my Animation II walk cycle.
I decided to step out of my comfort-zone and do a character of one of my friends!

Rough Weight Exercise Pass 3+

Third and final (for now!) rough pass for class. I'd like to finish this up for the end of the year and my demo reel. I added tails and made the feet less slide-y in some real problem areas.
Also, here's some notes from class:
