Urban Scrawl 9

Here's a ton of Photos from Urban Scrawl 9! It felt lucky that I was able to be a part of it two years in a row, and double lucky that I ended up painting beside my coworker and buddy from college. Not a bad weekend in the slightest. We were even in the shade!

This year was a lot larger than what I remembered the last being. The tent beside our paintings actually hosted an Arist Wrestling League where artists had to paint a crowd-chosen theme and won based on the crowd's decision. Sometimes, the winners got to smash a glass bottle over the head of the loser (that was okay though, promise).

A handful of friends, my dad, and a burst of heavy heavy rain showed up. All week (and all month) I slaved over wanting to think of an idea to paint. The only thing that I ended up thinking about was a kinda fucked up Mickey Mouse playing guitar. I patiently waited all week for another idea... to no avail. I tried and punch it up by adding a version of Donald, complete with a nipple, and a fat sausage-patty-shaped Pluto (though I made sure to write "PLANET" on his name tag instead).

The weekend was amazing and I will always recommend applying if you're an artist in the Columbus area. It's another reminder that Columbus has a rewarding arts community.

Urban Scrawl 8

August 23rd and 24th made for a pretty cool weekend spent at Columbus's own Urban Scrawl 8. It's a two day event with live music and painting. Paintings all go to the benefit of the arts district and art programs around the area. My friend Ian was harping on me and my roommate Maxx to apply for canvases earlier this summer. A month later we were given big primed plywood canvases (4X8, 8X8). Here's a picture from Saturday night as well as Saturday afternoon, followed by what I ended up with and me being a terrible dork:

Wish I would have taken more photos - I only was able to catch a few of my friends by their pieces. I feel really fortunate to know a handful of people who want to and can make giant paintings with the sun beating down on them. Take a look at their websites, too:

Japanther Mock-Ups

Poster/flyer comps and a mock-up for something I was making for an upcoming show. For now, the show's canceled - me and a handful of my Columbus friends are pretty bummed. I'll be crossing my fingers for another lineup that's this good to come to town (and, by all means, I'll be crossing my fingers for Japanther to finally come back to Columbus).

Birthday Mosh! Gig Poster

More practice making gig posters/flyers. I tried to have some fun with this one. I have had this image of my friend hardcore dancing in my head since summer, trying to draw it right... I felt like this was the perfect time to finally nail it down. There are a handful of tiny things here and there I might do differently if this weren't for fun - but overall, I am happy with the way it turned out.

I am mostly happy with getting comfortable and more familiar with the process from paper to photoshop. Huzzah learning!

Amative Lyric Video

For the past month, I have been working on this motion-graphics video for the local band, Amative. This is the second lyric video I've ever made, and I look forward to many more! I will be open for commissions as soon as winter break hits, but until then, I am going to be focusing on school and helping a friend with their senior thesis.

I did all of the movement of the type in Adobe Flash, then I exported a PNG sequence. After that, I brought the PNG sequence into after effects and created a MOV file, which I took into Final Cut Pro - where I added the old-tv-looking effects.

Be sure to check these guys out - celebrate your local music scene!

Hardcow Finale ?

Behold! I think this design is done, at least for now. I am going to order a tanktop of it after I finish this blog post so that hopefully I can get it within a week. I had the suggestion to change the Ohio to a color instead of a solid outline, as well as take the outline out completely. I updated the Ohio itself to a more solid representation (less wonky), I added whiskers, and I added a few overlays of a striped texture to the fur and Ohio. If I were to do any more to this, I would want to add grime/dirt to the entire design (an ongoing debate) and I would thicken the lines between the eyebrows and the eyes.

I am stoked on it, though - this is a design I want to continuously visit and update to create different versions of. That being said - it's good to finally get it out there and out of my head. Let the games begin.
